My project is a presentation I gave to the Salt Lake Community College Student Council. The purpose of the presentation is so I can start the first Recovery Collegiate Community on Campus.
My goal is to start a social recovery club on campus. The purpose of the club is to provide support for those with mental illness and substance use disorders. We will provide peer support in a drop in center and hold a support group meeting on campus weekly. The club will also engage in a monthly service project in our community. The purpose of this activity will be to be giving back to our community. This activity will also bring awareness to the community of what kind of assistance is available on campus.
There are several Recovery Collegiate Community’s at several University’s including the University Of Utah. The objective is to build a bridge from Salt Lake Community College to the University.
More course theme and connection is Freedom and less privileged.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt talked in his speech of the rights of freedom. I feel as a person who suffers from mental illness and substance use abuse disorder that I have a right to recovery. I feel I also have a right to an education as Roosevelt spoke of (140).
There is a large number of students that drop out of college due to mental illness and substance use disorder. We have a way to reverse this and need to take action. I feel that people with illness that struggle in school are in a category of being student less privileged.
Students in this population are at high risk of dropping out of school. Students are also at risk for relapse from either behaviors or drugs.
Martin Luther King did a lot of advocating for his community. I am sharing his passion and advocating for those who have the same illness as I do. I believe in the right to recovery. I am a leader in the recovery community as was M.L.K. I am an advocatory and fighting for their right of others by raising awareness.
The process for me was challenging, because of the time involved with all the other work I was behind on. I had my power point already from prior presentation. I did have to do some editing to it. I spent some time with my friend Arial on the phone. Arial is a National Consultant that goes round the nation putting together recovery collegiate at universities around the nation.
What I learned was some more knowledge of the figures about number of people in college struggling. I also learned the amount of money I can help the college get with this project. I know that my desire and passion is even stronger now to get this going. I am inspired by my work and the idea of this project. I am reaching out to the staff of the college. I am in need of an advisor so I can get this kicked off and started. I have some students that are interested in helping. I just lack support from an advisor. Recovery Rock stars is going to be an awesome thing. It is going to be here to help students along their way through college for years to come. I am very excited and driven to make this happen. Through this process of getting together I have learned I am very passionate about my recovery. I am passionate about helping others. I have a strong drive, and I perseverance. This project help me reflect on my past and see how far I have come in life. I have also realized how much doing this kind of work, helping others makes me so happy. I never cared about humanity. I did not care much about myself or life. Today I care. Today I am making a difference. Today I am changing the world. Today I love life.
